Baptised into Christ's family the church ...66 years ago at St Augustine Church, Porus, Manchester, then priest Neville DeSouza, later Diocesan Bishop, graciously not only baptised all these babies of single mom's but added his name as God Father. In so doing he overshadowed with loving kindness, the stigma in not only rural Jamaica, but nationally, of children born out of wedlock.
Confirmed at St Andrew Parish church Kingston, under then priest Herman Spence, later Suffragan Bishop, I found personal faith through the youth camp ministry of the Brethren Church, Teen Time Camps, around 2nd form - age 13(?). Led into full time ministry through a "calling" at that same camp, I was trained at the United Theological College (UTCWI) and admitted to the Deaconess Order in 1982(?)
A year's internship as a "Licensed Lady Worker", assigned to parish ministry, ended with ordination (later called Admission) as a parish Deaconess. Assisting then priest Robert Thompson, later Suffragan Bishop, for 5 years we served the 5 churches of the Stony Hill Cure. I became known as the 'flying nun' from a then popular movie, due to graduating from a car that broke down every two bells , to a spanking new Honda 50 Motorbike .
A controversial marriage to a multiple divorcee resulted in the suspension of my license to preach and minister in the Diocese of Jamaica (Anglican Church). Other personal infractions led to an "invitation" to turn in my license. In essence I was fired - "nicely".
Nearly 40 years and an avalanche of prayers later - 2 sons, divorce, grandchild and remarriage ; work in education, the NGO sector and becoming a gender justice and human rights activist and consultant, I have morphed into an entrepreneur and ended up right back in church work as a church office Administrator, albeit. I remain a die hard Anglican - critiques and complaints notwithstanding , and most importantly an avid follower of Jesus Christ.
The challenge with the flight of years is the fight fades ... also have to figure out how to integrate my passion for women's and other human rights with being an ambassador for Christ - the passion of my teen years which shaped my life of service. I am intrigued by the possibilities of CoRe, especially th ecumenical aspect with its potential for unifying the Church.
